Some of you may know about my song parody series, ParentZ Bop, where parents send me their rewritten lyrics to a popular song and I sing it. I’ve taken a little hiatus in my effort to slow down over the summer, and it’s been a few months since I recorded a video.
If you’re new around these parts, you can catch up on my older ParentZ Bop song parody videos here! Past favorites include “You Can’t Always Poop Where You Want”, “Eat Something”, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice (If Tuck-In Wasn’t 45 Minutes)” and more! I’m back today with lyrics from one of my favorite bloggers, a friend I’ve actually met in person AND get to room with at the BlogHer conference later this week! She’s the lovely, talented, wise and witty Sarah Rudell Beach of Left Brain Buddha.
Sarah rewrote Billy Joel’s Piano Man and has managed to eloquently capture the highs and lows of parenting in one song. Initially, her lyrics were part of a blog post reviewing Jennifer Senior’s book, All Joy and No Fun: An Ode to the Shatterable Moments of Parenthood. Her lyrics are poignant, clever, and oh-so-relatable. I think you’ll love Piano Mom. (Psst, my toddler makes an appearance during the outtakes, otherwise known as Mommy’s first failed attempt at recording.) Enjoy!
Piano Mom- Sarah Rudell Beach
It’s 10am on a Saturday,
The regular crowd snuggles in,
My four-year-old’s curled up next to me,
His head nestled under my chin.
I say, please let me breathe in this memory,
For this isn’t how it usually goes,
This will be short, it’ll be sweet,
let me know it complete,
Before this beautiful moment explodes.
Breathe in the magic when you know you can,
Breathe in the good when it’s right,
For we all know we will need this memory,
When it all goes to sh!t later tonight!
Now these kids have stolen this heart of mine
They’ve taught me to laugh and be free
I love their silly ways and the games that we play
And most days there’s nowhere I’d rather be
But sometimes I think this is killing me
And the smile runs away from my face
I think, can’t I just get a few quiet minutes
Away from this crazy place
And then my daughter brings me a homemade card
And makes me forget all the strife.
She’s sorry she shoved me, She tells me she loves me
And will for the rest of her life.
So the parents are practicing patience
Knowing the children will one day be grown
Yes they’re sharing the craziness of parenting
Knowing it will be years until they’re alone
Breathe in the magic when you know you can,
Breathe in the good when it’s right,
For we all know we will need this memory,
When it all goes to sh!t later tonight!
We’ve had a wonderful Saturday
The children have been full of smiles
And though they threw fits, even acted like sh!ts,
We still had fun for a while
We took the kids to a carnival
The day was full of good cheer
Until the balloons blew up, the kids both threw up,
And we thought “Man, what are we doing here?”
Breathe in the magic when you know you can,
Breathe in the good when it’s right,
For we all know we will need this memory,
When it all goes to sh!t later tonight!
You can read more of Sarah’s beautiful words in her full post, An Ode to the Shatterable Moments.

This is great! And so very relatable as you said. I’ve missed these too, glad you’re back 😉
I love this series and this one s great! AS you said, it pretty much sums up this parenting gig – the good, the bad, & the ugly! 🙂
LOVE this! So clever!
You kill me! Funny, funny stuff. Sing on, Stephanie!
Just watched this now and I’m not sure whether it’s seeing you sing, or the power of Sarah’s awesome words, but I’m crying and I love you both. So much. And that, is my song tonight.
