Mark Appling

Mark Appling is a husband, father of two, science teacher, and adventurer. His writing has been featured in social media arguments, New Year’s cards, and numerous emails to colleagues. After almost 20 years working with kids, he found that stories are a universal need. They bring us together and help us make sense of the world. He is looking forward to the opportunity to share a story with the LTYM community.

Sheryl Cardozo

Sheryl Cardozo is a South Boulder based writer, comic, educator, and activist who keeps a stack of old travel guides to remember the excitement of pre-mom life. A native New Yorker and naturalized Australian, her favorite collection is the one of friends from around the world. A Boulderite since ’96, she loves the mountains, and takes solace that in the deep south, she could be considered sporty. She’s a member of the Boulder Arts Commission, committed to DEI efforts, and the self-appointed social director of the 2nd grade moms at Mesa Elementary. Credits include stand up gigs in NYC, including Comedy Cellar, Greenwich Comedy Club, and Dangerfields. She had a sold-out show planned for the 2020 Melbourne International Comedy Festival but Fauci destroyed that dream. A currently dog-free dog person, she adores (most of the) time with her Aussie partner and her one and fun 7-year-old daughter.

Ashley Paige Fetyko

Ashley Paige Fetyko is a mom to two tiny, brilliant daredevils whose mere existence is a miracle. They also make her question her sanity regularly, and she would like to know when they will stop trying to lick everything (including the cat). She is an attorney, working as Senior Counsel & Communications Director at Tyson & Mendes after serving as a prosecutor throughout the state of Colorado for close to a decade. She is lucky to talk and write for a living, often about two of her favorite things: trial, and Taylor Swift (her husband is a patient man). She is writing a book on thriving in work and motherhood, making the case (alongside her best friend) for why this is the season of Superbloom. She coaches high school mock trial, dabbles in photography, and loves a good pun.

Carla Fisher

Carla is an educator, parent, yoga instructor and partner. As she zooms towards 50 she is prepping for what she is calling her third career (after teaching and mothering), as a therapist. Her biggest delights come from planning family trips, volunteering with seniors and second graders, all things mindfulness, long hikes with a friend, and quietly finding the meaning and humor in life through writing. Currently she is overly obsessed with learning about attachment theory and menopause, and relishing her kids’ growing independence. She has lived in Golden for ten years with her husband, three sons, and a spoiled pooch.

Karen Halverson

Karen Halverson is a writer, educator, and mother of two daughters. After covid-school and twenty-nine years in the classroom, she imagines alternate realities. She loves sunrise, time on trails, and getaways to Santa Fe. Most of all, she enjoys her daughters while camping in Canyonlands, dancing in the kitchen, drinking cappuccinos at Trident, and listening to their latest EDM favs in the car.

Steph Hauser

Steph Hauser is a writer, podcaster, ultrarunner, and the founder and Executive Director of 4those, a nonprofit dedicated to providing hope, healing and possibility for former micropreemies and their families. Last year, she ran 147 miles (in a row!) and is currently in the middle of a new wild running streak to raise money for and bring awareness to the big story of finding hope in some of life’s most difficult moments. Her story has been featured in Runner’s World Magazine, local and international news outlets, and on a variety of podcasts and stages. Steph is also the host of The Zev Project, a podcast that shares her own journey around extreme prematurity, including the “Tell Me What’s Good.” strategy that carried her through, alongside the stories of other people who have walked their own challenging paths. Steph co-owns FOX•DOG COFFEE with her amazing husband Ben and lives in Louisville, CO, with Ben, their dog, and their four incredible boys.

Stacey Hutson

Former Chicago agency copywriter and food blogger, Stacey Hutson, now lives in Golden with her husband and two still slightly helpless daughters, ages 4 and 6. She exchanged the agency life for the freedom of freelance  when she became a mom, and is currently working on a documentary for the Boulder-based company, Paleovalley. Stacey wanted to be a mom her whole life. Which is why she was so confused when motherhood was not the rainbows and sunshine she always imagined it would be. Her nervous system was overwhelmed, her house was a disaster, and she couldn’t understand why she was so nostalgic for her fun, spontaneous pre-mom life. That’s why she created the Mother Plus Podcast with Stephanie Sprenger. To give a voice to the “too much” moms who feel like they are failing at motherhood, and don’t want to fail anymore. She and her co-host host virtual and in-person workshops and retreats made to help “mother plussers” find joy in their motherhood.

Lisa Jones

When Smithsonian magazine sent Lisa Jones to Wyoming’s Wind River Indian Reservation to write a story about quadriplegic Northern Arapahoe horse trainer and traditional healer Stanford Addison, she fell down an emotional and spiritual rabbit hole that eight years later produced her memoir Broken: A Love Story (Simon & Schuster). Her writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Salon and High Country News, and has been read on All Things Considered as a commentary. She’ll lead writing retreats steeped in nature later this month (with Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix and Heartbreak) and in the fall (all by herself). She loves cross-country skiing, running 17-minute miles, and the ukulele meetup in Longmont, where she lives with her husband. And she teaches creative writing to all levels and genres of writers. You can find her at lisajonesteaches.com

Tracy Mayo

In 2014 Tracy moved to Boulder from the D.C. area with her husband, Frank, and their Flat-Coated Retriever, Hazel. She retired from a 30-year career in commercial construction management, as a trailblazing woman in a man’s world. She was active in the adoption reform movement during that time. When she’s not attending to Hazel’s every whim, she can be found at one of her many volunteer gardening projects, or feeding her bountiful backyard birds. She began work on her memoir in 2015, which evolved into a seven-year journey into the craft of creative writing.  Her essays have been published in Heimat Review and in The Ocotillo Review and her memoir, Childless Mother: A Search for Son and Self was released by Vanguard Press in March 2024.  www.tracymayo.com

Haley McNabb

Haley is a Certified DONA International Labor and Birth Doula and also has a background in guiding wilderness experiences for children and adults alike. She finds nourishment in the wilderness and the tender yet powerful space of birth. Pregnancy and birth of her first son fueled the desire to work with women through this incredible rite of passage, the place where women become mothers. Years of experience as a guide, coach, and mama of two little boys contribute to her ability to connect to families as their stories are born. When she’s not supporting families, you’ll find Haley with her hands (and feet!) in the dirt…whether that’s in the garden, woods or mountains with her family.

Ellen Nordberg

Ellen Nordberg is a freelance writer and storyteller who has performed her stand-up comedy and essays in Moms Unhinged, the Listen to Your Mother Show, the Narrators, and the Boulder Story Collective. Her essays have been published in the LA Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, the Denver Post, the Huffington Post, and 5280 magazine. Her works have been featured by Stories on Stage. Ellen lives in Louisville where she teaches water aerobics and collects cat towers.

Melissa Hundley Wolak

Melissa Hundley Wolak is a seasoned therapeutic coach, clinical speech-language cognitive therapist, speaker, aspiring author, and passionate advocate for nurturing the mind-body connection, holistic wellbeing, and healing. With over 25 years of experience, Melissa has developed unique methods integrating profound mindset shifts and intentional lifestyle practices. Her “connecting neuroscience and soul” approach fosters full expression, clarity, and calm. Melissa’s expertise has been recognized in esteemed publications such as Working Mother, mindbodygreen, Huff Post, Prevention, and Brit + Co.
